The 1,000 Benches Program
Active Living Ramsey County (ALRC) is a partnership dedicated to creating
and promoting environments that make it safe and convenient for people to
integrate physical activity into their daily lives. One of the initiatives of ALRC
is to provide 1,000 benches throughout Ramsey County in networks of up to
20 benches that encourage people to walk in their neighborhood and promote
environmentally sustainable communities.
The 1,000 Benches Program is being implemented using a 50-50 cost share
approach with local governments. The County will match 50% of the cost of
benches and installation, up to a maximum of$600 per installed bench site. A
bench site includes a concrete slab, bench and three engraved pavers set into
the slab. Site restoration is the responsibility of the applicant. Each individual
project is limited to no more than 20 benches, but local governments may
apply for more than one network of benches. Two pilot projects have been
implemented to demonstrate the program. Refer to the 1,000 Benches Pilot
Projects summary in this packet.
A requirement of the program is that only the benches and pavers identified by
ALRC may be installed. Each bench is to be installed on a concrete pad with
three (3) engraved pavers set into the concrete near the bench. The pavers will
be engraved with inspirational quotes and sponsor identities, including logos.
PACKET MATERIALS CONTACT
❑ Ramsey County's Mission Mary Elizabeth Berglund
❑ Application Form Saint Paul — Ramsey County Public Health
(651) 266-1125
❑ Planning Guide MaryElizabeth.Berglund@co.Ramsey.mn.us
❑ Paver Guide
❑ Bench Site Images
n Pilot Projects
o Legal Documents
7ILRC
Active Living Ramsey County
