Parks,Trails&Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes January 12,2010
Page 2
3. NEW BUSINESS
A. Elmer L. Andersen Memorial Trail SiLynne Partnership Discussion
Ms. Olson indicated that Council looked at the design for the trail corridor and Ramsey
County is also looking at that with their Parks Commission this evening. The designer,
Derrek Hames is not presenting at that meeting but Ms. Olson did provide them the
models and the portfolio that Mr. Hames put together. They are looking at possibly
following suit and are also looking at the color scheme. Ms. Olson stated she suggested
having benches along the EAMT corridor.
Ms. Olson indicated Greg Mack of Ramsey County Parks felt that the City could possibly
get funding for that corridor through the 1,000 Bench Program run by Active Living
Ramsey County. The program entails the City to contribute 50 percent and then Active
Living Ramsey County would contribute the other 50 percent. Mr. Mack felt H.B. Fuller
may possibly be interested in contributing as the City's portion, so ALRC and H.B. Fuller
could possibly fund the entire project. The Committee agreed that the City should
contact the Elmer L. Andersen Foundation and H.B. Fuller to see if they would contribute
toward signage and park benches.
Committee Member Garretson mentioned there are some nice benches in New Brighton
at the Family Service Center and other locations from the ALRC 1,000 bench program, if
anyone is interested in viewing the style.
Ms. Olson indicated that the 1,000 Bench Program has not had many applications.
Ms. Olson feels this is because of the cost of the program's concrete slab/paver
requirements. She feels that the costs make the program less attractive. Ms. Olson
indicated she determined it would cost approximately$650 per concrete slab. She
indicated the reason the PTRC decided against going with the 1,000 Bench Program in
the past was that each bench would cost approximately$1,200 and the program would
only cover 50 percent of that expense.
Ms. Olson asked if anyone would want to work with her on approaching H.B. Fuller and
the Elmer L. Anderson Foundation.
Chair Peck stated he would like to work with Ms. Olson on this and would discuss this
with her further after Ms. Olson comes back from vacation.
Ms. Olson informed that the benches have arms and are made with recycable material.
Ms. Olson indicated she would be back from vacation on February 2nd. Chair Peck
indicated he would begin researching how to contact the Foundation and Community
Development.
