Both types of Motions are exhaustedly discussed in Robert's Rules of
Order Newly Revised loth Addition. I will attempt to summarize the Rules that
apply to these Motions, but for the most part, I'll be repeating what's contained in
Robert's Rules.
1. Motion to Postpone to a Certain Date and Time. This is the motion by
which action on a pending question can be put off to a definite date,
meeting, hour, or until a certain event. This motion can be made
regardless of how much debate there has been on the motion it
proposes to postpone. A question may be postponed either so that it
may be considered at a more convenient time, or because debate has
shown reasons for holding off a decision until later. The following are
some characteristics of the motion to postpone to a certain time:
a. This motion takes precedence over the main motion.
b. Is out of order when another has the floor.
C. Must be seconded.
d. Is debatable, but debate is limited in that it must not go to the
merits of the main question any more than is necessary to
enable the assembly to decide whether the main question
should be postponed to what time.
e. Is amendable as to the date and time to which the main
question is to be postponed.
',,LtiO AC?t\•":ITTED IN V ISCONSIN
