EN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: March 17, 2010
TO: Economic Development Commission
FROM: James Lehnhoff, Community Development Director
SUBJECT: Gateway Sign Selection
Requested Action
Recommend a gateway sign design, location, and vendor to the City Council.
Backround
Item 3.B
The gateway sign discussion has a lengthy history with many twists and turns. The 2010 capital
improvement plan (CIP) includes $10,000 for the construction of a gateway sign.
At the December 2008 meeting, the EDC voted to recommend the purchase and installation of a
three foot by seven foot aluminum sign at the corner of County Road E and Lexington Avenue.
Due to insufficient right-of-way in the northwest corner of the intersection, the sign would need to
be constructed at the southwest intersection where there is sufficient right-of-way. Based on the
selected design for an aluminum sign, the estimated cost for the sign and installation was $5,600,
not including lighting (Attachment A). As part of the recommendation, the EDC prepared a list of
other priority locations for future gateway signs:
1. County Road E& Lexington Avenue
2. Red Fox Road & Lexington Avenue
3. Highway 96 at Interstate 3 S W
4. Highway 96 at Lexington Avenue
5. Other location options include: County Road D at Cleveland Avenue, County Road D at
Lexington Avenue, and County Road E2 at Cleveland Avenue/Interstate 3 5 W. The City has
gateway sign easements at ihe two Cleveland Avenue locations.
During the January 2009 EDC meeting, the Commission voted to delay the gateway sign
recommendation pending discussions with the Arden Plaza property owners regarding a potential
C'aty of'lyden Iills
IlAhdocsllahlAHdatalPlanninglEconomic DevelopmentlGateway SignslMarch 2010 Quotes1031710 - EDCReport - Gateway signs.doc
Page 1 of 3
