Parks,Trails&Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes March 16,2010
Page 2
that section and make it a separate Segment named 03. By doing this they could then
move just that portion into high priority.
MOTION: Council member Straumann moved to name the area from the railroad to -
Grey Fox Road Segment 03 and move to the high priority level. The motion
was seconded by Committee Member Messerly. The motion carried
unanimously.
Discussion ensued about a sidewalk from Grey Fox to Red Fox. Ms. Olson indicated she
could get an estimate on that segment. Ms. Olson asked if they would like to add this as
Segment S. The members indicated it should not be added as a segment at this time.
B. Elmer L. Andersen Memorial Trail Signage
Chair Peck informed they had a productive meeting with Elmer L. Andersen's son and
daughter(Julian and Emily) and they indicated that they were pleased to be involved and
supported the design of the sign. They also agreed to provide the verbiage on their father
for the sign.
Ms. Olson reported that she and Derrek Hames (designer) with Ramsey County Parks and
Recreation regarding the Elmer L. Andersen signage. Ramsey County indicated that
they have money left from a grant that they would like to use for possibly one large sign
at Lake Johanna at the beginning of the trail segment and possibly a couple smaller ones.
Ramsey County needs to have the money spent by June 30th, so the City needs to move
forward with getting quotes. Chair Peck suggested that maybe they use some of the grant
money as a down payment on the initial fabrication because of the quick deadline. Chair
Peck indicated a benefit of having Mr. Andersen's son and daughter involved is that they
Y
can catch the essence of what Elmer L. Andersen represented. He also mentioned Julian
and Emily were curious about why the H. B. Fuller Foundation turned down support for
the project and liked the idea of going with the 1,000 Ramsey County Bench Grant.
Julian and Emily are in support of getting H. B. Fuller onboard which would then provide
more quotes of Elmer L. Andersen along the trail. Ms. Olson indicated that Ramsey
County did have a few suggestions on the design but that they did agree the Arden Hills
map should be on all the signs and will not require that the Ramsey County map be on the
sign. Chair Peck wanted to go on record for recognizing former Chair Bill Henry on the
fantastic job he did wording the resolution. Ms. Olson mentioned that Emily and Julian
also commended the wording on the resolution.
C. Oath of Office
Discussion ensued regarding the Oath of Office. This item had been tabled at the last
meeting. Ms. Olson indicated she would leave this up to the committee and did have an
Oath of Office that they could read if they decided to go forward with this. She did
indicate they were not required to do this since they were not a commission. The
committee members decided it was not necessary to do an Oath of Office.
