The National Recreation and Park Association will be holding its annual congress in
Minneapolis the last week of October. The Department will be hosting two off-site
institutes at Tamarack Nature Center. Monday, October 25 Tamarack will be featured
in the Best of Show-NACPRO Annual County/Regional Park Tour. On Tuesday,
October 26 Ramsey County will host an off-site institute entitled Children and Nature:
Breaking New Ground at Tamarack.
Representatives from the departments of Parks and Recreation and Public Works met
with Minnesota Department of Transportation staff to discuss a comprehensive study of
trail crossings of 1-694 between 35-W and 35-E. The goal of the study is to identify the
appropriate intervals and specific locations for recreational trail crossings and commuter
bikeways crossings. No specific timeline has been established for this study; however,
it is anticipated that it will involve members of the ALRC! and the Parks and Recreation
Commission.
REPORT FROM CHAIR AND OTHER COMMISSION MEMBERS
Rich Straumann suggested that the Commission hold its October meeting at Tamarack
Nature Center.
Mr. Jenni congratulated Mr. Mack as the recipient of the Friends of St. Paul and
Ramsey County Parks and Trails Outstanding Service Award presented at the Friends
25 anniversary celebration. Mr. Jenni moved, seconded by Mr. Straumann, that the
Commission affirm the quotation offered by the Friends Executive Director, Peggy
Lynch, about the award recipient, "There simply couldn't be a classier guy to work with.
It doesn't matter if it is a tiny local issue that impacts only a few people or a funding
issue that impacts the entire park system, Greg approaches it with dedication and
professionalism. He knows how to pick his bathes and he certainly has a winning
record." Motion carried.
ADJOURNMENT
Upon appropriate motion, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Vicki Dahlquist
3
