The City of Minneapolis, among other cities, has adopted
regulations that a11ow beekeeping. It appears that this can be done safely with some
restrictions. The Commission recommends that the City Code be amended to allow
beekeeping subject restrictions. The City Code would be amended to identify haney bees
as farm animals and then allow them to be kept in residential areas subject to conditions.
§ 90.05 FARM ANIMALS.
Farm animals shall only be kept in an agricultural district of the city or on a residential lot
of at least ten acres in size, provided that no animal shelter shall be within 300 feet of an
adjoining piece of property. Except that honey bees may be kept in other residential
areas subject the following conditions: 1) Lot size shall be a minimum of one-half acre,
2) no more than two bee colonies shall be allowed, 3) hives shall be setback from
property lines a minimum of 25 feet, 4) permission must be obtained from owners of all
property abutting the proposed site, 5) a permit shall be obtained from the city with
payment of a fee as noted in the city fee schedule, and 6) applicant must document having
received at least 16 hours of training in beekeeing.
If the City Council supports the change, P&Z will develop the proposed amending
ordinance at its next meeting.
I
I
I
I
I
26
