Present were: Deb Gallop, Wargo Nature Center Mary Capra, Centerville, City Historian Sarah Horner, Pioneer Press Reporter Pat Branch, Centerville Park & Recreastion Ed Fleming, MN Science Museum Suzanne Seeley, Centerville Parks & Recreation Tom Young, MN Science Museum Tom Dupre, Centerville Resident Don Paul, Centerville Resident Hal Liebel, Centerville property owner / Indian Mounds The discussion centered on past archeological suy-veys on Native American sites within the present City of Centerville. Mr. Tom Dupre and his father Mr. Mel Dupre, as well as Mr. Hal Liebel have fairly large holdings of artifacts they had collected as children growing up in Centerville. After the meeting I received a telephone call from Ms Horner. Mary Capra had reported to her that the Parks & Recreation Committee was pursuing an objective on preserving Centerville's hfstory by placing placards along Main Street marking Native American sites. She left the impression that we were actively pursuing a grant to achieve this goal. I told Ms Horner that the committee was only in the earliest stages of thinking through what could be done in this area and to report that we had an on going project was an overstatement of the facts. Before we can seriously pursue grant money, we would need a much better defined project than we currently have on this subject. I had a short side discussion with Mr. Liebel, His major interest is the preservation of the Indian Mound that is on his property. Mr. Dallas Larson and Ms. Mary Capra report that there may be an opportunity to compete for an Enhancement Grant this spring (April). The grant could possibly be used to acquire historical property. �� This is something that has been on our dream list and it looks like we should give this serious consideration. I One of the secrets to getting grant money is to have a solid plan for how that money will be spent. Our plans could range from placing a historical marker on CSAH 14 near the Indian mounds, to buying the property i and preserving the site. Does anyone want to outline a plan for what should/could be done here?
