M M0:
TO: Parks & Recreation Committee
FROM: Kim Stephan
DATE: March 31, 2011
SUBJECT: Potential Eagle Scout Flag Project
Following is email correspondence regarding a potential Eagle Scout Flag Project:
I am Rob Faust from Boy Scout troop 232 and I am a friend of Mary Capra. She suggested that a park flag
pole project might be a good Eagle Scout project. I would like to talk to you about whether it's a possible
project and the details. You can reach me at this email or 651- 429 -4245. (Evenings and weekends are best)
Thanks, Rob
Reply from Chairperson Branch:
I think a flag pole project is a great idea. The Centerville Parks and Recreation Committee has approved
Boy Scott Eagle projects in the past and is very likely to agree to your project. The next Committee meeting
is April 6th at 6:30 pm in Centerville City Hall. Would you like to make a presentation at that meeting?
Your presentation should be short and right to the point. What do you want to do, what will cost, who will
pay for the project and what help do you need from Centerville? If you are ready to make a presentation this
month, call Kim Stephan, City P &R Coordinator, at 651- 429 -3232.
The Committee has discussed the idea of a city flag pole in the past. Our plans are not set - so there is
considerable flexibility. A new park called Cornerstone Park is to be built this summer in the area between
St Gen's historic church and County Road 14 (Main Street). There is space allocated for a flag pole in that
new park. We have also been contacted by a citizen who would like to see a memorial set up dedicated to
all the people from Centerville who have served in the US military. That memorial could be as simple as a
flag pole and a plaque. But there should be a light directly on the flag. I believe the City has a flag pole that
could be used. Come talk to us. Pat Branch
Reply from myself:
If you are ready to talk to the Parks & Recreation Committee on April 6th please let me know by this Friday
when I put their Agenda materials together. If not, the next committee meeting is May 4th. We do have a
flag pole that was donated by I believe Cannon Falls and it is BIG. Details on that could be provided by
Public Works at 651- 429 -4750. I can supply you with Bob Hathaway's number if you so desire, he is the
Veteran who would be willing to work with you or give you ideas perhaps on the memorial aspect of it if that
is something you would be interested in.
Let me know if you need help. Thanks, Kim Stephan
