Right now, there are department directors or consultants that have greater influence
than others on how the City business is conducted
Answer Options Response Response
P Count
All the time 20.0% 1
Sometimes 80.0% 4
Not really 0.0% 0
Don't know 0.0% 0
1 would say as department directors and consultants we act
Answer Options Response Response
Percent Count
As a team most of the time 60.0% 3
As separate units most of the time 40.0% 2
Do you have suggestions on how staff can work better as a team? 2
• A monthly project review committee meeting(as needed)to discuss projects together as a
group in terms of the engineering, public works, planning, community development, building,
and even fire and police when necessary.
• Teamwork all too often means that one department needs everyone else to chip in to get a
project done but they never have time to help with other departments. There needs to be a
greater understanding that it takes all three departments to make the city function and no one
department makes everything happen for the city. To be a little cliche, it is a three legged stool
that keeps the city functioning. Each department has priority projects, but there also needs to
be a set of common goals that all departments are trying to achieve regardless of which
department the project is home to.
How should we accomplish tasks on behalf of the City?
Answer Options Response
Ps"N" Count
Use the collaborative team approach 80.0% 8
We should work within our own department and not
worry about the others. (We have too little time to 0.0% 0
collaborate)
Administrator gives direction and staff follow 20.0% 2
Other(please specify) 40.0% 4
• There are advantages and disadvantages to various approaches. The City Administrator should
determine the approach to use. I am fine with various approaches as long as things are
managed and quality work is getting done.
• I think that we need to work as a group to identify tasks that are needed to accomplish City
goals, and the goals should have a consensus of City Council support. Depending on the goal, it
may have more of a collaborative approach or it may simply be direction from the
Administrator.
• While we all need to work together, the administrator and/or city attorney should be the final
word in areas that are unclear or when department managers disagree.
• Administrator gives direction and staff follows to implement the decisions of the city council. I
am comfortable with a collaborative team approach being used to implement those decisions.
