Why Centennial Fire District needs an Aerial
Opportunity presents itself - The price of this truck is $150k vs a new aerial at $800k
a. Fire Safety has the truck listed for $175k on their web site. When looking at comparable trucks
on the internet they are going for $200k -$300k.
b. 1 year warranty no maintenance
c. 20% down($30,000), 3 years 0% interest ($40,000/yr., $3,333/month)
d. The mechanic from Minot ND said the truck was well maintained and should have no issues,
would recommend it.
a. Rochester Fire went and looked at the truck and said it appeared to be in good condition, did
not see any issues.
2. Buildings over 2 stories (from the article "When Should you Purchase an Aerial Ladder')
An aerial device is recommended when a number of buildings within the jurisdiction appear to be
beyond the reach of existing fire department ground ladders. This recommendation is not only based
on ISO recommendations but is a basic common-sense concept. If a significant number of your
buildings are beyond the reach of your ground ladders, you had better do something about it.
3. ISO
a. NUMBER OF NEEDED LADDER COMPANIES (NL):
Individual ladder/service response areas with at least 5 buildings of 3 stories or 32 feet or more in
height (ground to eaves) or with at least 5 buildings that have a Needed Fire Flow greater than
3,500 gpm or with at least 5 buildings meeting any combination of those criteria must have a
ladder company.
When no individual response area needs a ladder company, the fire protection area needs at least
1 ladder company if buildings in the fire protection area meet the criteria above.
b. Our last evaluation was done in 2005, we had 51.88 points, rating of 5/9. Circle Pines had 17
buildings at least 3 stories and 1 at 4 stories. Centerville had 1 building at 3 stories. Based on
this Circle Pines should have a ladder.
PPC Points
1 90.00 or more
2 80.00 to 89.99
3 70.00 to 79.99
4 60.00 to 69.99
5 50.00 to 59.99
6 40.00 to 49.99
7 30.00 to 39.99
8 20.00 to 29.99
9 10.00 to 19.99
10 0.00 to 9.99
According to ISO we should have at least 3 engines based on the fire flow calculations, which
we now meet this criteria.
There has been significant changes to the ISO rating schedule since our last evaluation. We will
be scheduling an evaluation for this spring/summer.
e. Insurance Federation of MN — I spoke to the VP of Public Affairs which I have known for years. He said
credit scores for homeowners is a big factor in determining insurance rates. On Homeowners, going
from ISO 5 to a lower rating gets 4% reduction, going up in ratings was only impacted when above an
8. He was still waiting to hear back on commercial properties.
f. LMC — (This is probably the most significant information)
67
