Proclamation <br />A DAY OF ACTION TO END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE <br />March 7, 2017 <br />WHEREAS: domestic violence, a pattern of behavior used to gain or maintain power and <br />control over an intimate partner, happens here in our community and across our state; and <br />WHEREAS: empathy happens here for the family, friends, and communities that have <br />experienced the painful death of someone to domestic violence as at least 21 people were <br />murdered due to domestic violence in 2016 alone; and <br />WHEREAS: refuge happens here through over 80 domestic violence programs in Minnesota <br />providing services to over 65,000 victims annually; and <br />WHEREAS: healing happens here through trauma informed treatment and connection; and <br />WHEREAS: accountability happens here with over 10,000 orders for protection issued each <br />year; and <br />WHEREAS: honoring the pioneering work of Minnesota advocates who founded one of the <br />nation's first shelters happens here; and <br />WHEREAS: collaboration happens here between domestic violence programs, law <br />enforcement, court advocates, housing agencies, and community members to ensure the <br />safety of survivors; and <br />WHEREAS: domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness for women and their <br />children, economic empowerment happens here when affordable housing is recognized as a <br />human right. <br />WHEREAS: the solutions to end domestic violence happen here, with the commitment of <br />our entire community. <br />NOW, THEREFORE I, Mayor Jeff Paar by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of <br />the City of Centerville do hereby proclaim the 7h day of March, 2017 as A Day of Action to <br />End Domestic Violence. <br />Attest: <br />City Clerk <br />20 <br />Jeff Paar, Mayor <br />
