The City of Centerville occupies an area that is historically significant both to the City and to the area
prior to the founding of the City. The City has in its possession artifacts and antiques that represent
historical significance and importance of the City; however, the City does not currently have an
accurate count or representation of the artifacts in its possession. The goal of this grant is to provide
the funding to accurately inventory and catalog the items currently held by the City, and software to
provide a digital repository for the items. Without this funding the City will be unable to inventory and
catalog the items, nor keep a digital record of the items; the public will not be able to benefit from the
City holding these items, unless an inventory and a cataloging is completed to determine what the City
possesses. Initially, the number of artifacts will be approximately fifty to sixty items that will need to
be inventoried and catalogued. The artifacts range in age, the oldest being potentially thousands of
years old. The scope of this grant will encompass the inventory and cataloging process from beginning
to end. The grant will pay for the professional services of a contractor to take a professional inventory
and catalog all of the City's artifacts and antiques, and will also include the supplies and materials
necessary to complete the process. This grant will also include Past Perfect, the museum software, and
a laptop to be exclusively used for this grant. The City will own and operate the software following the
completion of the inventory and cataloging of the items. This software was recommended to us by the
Minnesota Historical Society as well as other societies for use in this type of project. The City will also
own the supplies provided for in this grant. At the end of this project, the City of Centerville will have a
complete and thorough inventory of the items and its possession. Following the completion of this
project, the City intends to prepare and publicly display the items in City Hall and other places to
benefit the public.
Please select the need and rationale that best fits your project from one of the following:
Need and Rationale (select one) This project is present in a long-range plan developed and
adopted by the recipient's governing authority.
Need and Rationale:
The City of Centerville currently does not have a historical display or exhibit to showcase the antiques
and artifacts that portray the history of the City. In order to create a display or exhibit the City needs
to know the extent of its collection. This lead to the City's desire to pursue a grant from the Minnesota
Historical Society to inventory and catalog the items. The grant will also allow the City the ability to
catalog and inventory future items that may come into its possession, since the City will own the
supplies that will be paid for with the grant. Following the award of this grant, the City would like to
display the items to the public so the City residents are able to understand and appreciate the historical
significance of their City. On a broader level, the City believes it is important for its citizens to have a
knowledge of their City's history, and in an interesting format that will appeal to its residents. The City
believes this will be achieved by eventually have a publicly available display for its residents. As the
History Relevance Campaign states, "knowledge of the past and the practice of researching and making
sense of what happened in the past - is crucially important to the well being of individuals,
communities, and the future of our nation."
Work Plan and Timetable:
Award of Grant
Week One:
-Purchase of laptop and materials/ supplies requested by vendor
Week Two:
38
