YA;;~!!/~ rg~

Many residents have lived in Cen-
terville for generations, others have
moved in from outlying areas for vari- _
ous reasons. Most often I hear it's be-
cause of the - rural atmosphere. the
lakes and the outstanding schools in
the Centennial School District. People
come and go, as do businesses, but
one thing has remained a stable feature
of Centerville. St. Genevieve's Church.
The current church. built in -1905 has
been the center of many events and
memories besides Mass; Baptisms,
weddings. First Communion and Fu-
nerals. Quiet were the church bells
for numerous years until the current
priest. Fr. Tom Fitzgerald came to St.
Genevieve a couple of years ago. The
bells historically had rung prior to
Mass and the Angelus was played on
the smaller bell alternating with the
ringing of the large bell in memory of
the passing of a church member.
Donna Land, the church's secretary
reminisces of years ago when she
would accompany her grandfather,
Chauncey Barett to Mass. Chauncey
had been St. Genevieve's bell ringer for
30 year and would upon occasion. al-
low her to ring the bell. She recalls
being lifted off the ground from the
strength of the bell as it would ring!
Local resident. Andy Cardinal,
who has been active at St. Genevieve's
since he was seven- years old, has been
ringing the bell five minutes prior to
Sundays 8:00 am Mass since the arrival
of Fr. Tom. Andy stateS that there is
a proper method to effldent bell ring-
ing. In his young boyhood years while
serving as an alter boy, there were
dmes when the bell was rung a bit too
zealously, causing the bell to fall off of
its wheel. The boys would then have
to race up the ladder into the steeple
and push the bell back Into place. be-
fore getting caught! Now, - a much
wiser man. he has learned that one
must pull the rope. allowing the bell
ring to ring before pulling the rope
again. He used to ring the bell 40
dmes. five minutes before Mass, but
now stateS that he typically rings the
bell 50 dmes and upon spedal occa-
sions, will give the bell a feW extra

rings! (editor"s note: living across from the church. I've counted 108 rings-but I
count the dings and the dongs. Andy tells me he only counts the pull on the roper)
I personally enjoy the ringing of the church bells and perhaps we'll hear them ring
more often in tribute to those we love and in dmes of celebration.
Mass at St. Genevieve's is held
on Sunday at 8 & lOam; Satur-
day at 4:30 pm; and Monday,
Wednesday and Friday at 8 am.

Andy Cardinal promptly rings
the church bell Sunday morning
5 minutes prior to the 8:00
Mass. Often times he has an au-
dience of young children who sit in
a special room in the balcony with
their parents and enjoy watching
him ring the bellI

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

: The Shoreview :I
.
