The information is received when the pigeon
flies across an antennae, similar to how groceries are scanned at the
check-out. The data is reviewed from all the pigeons that raced and
the winners are then determined from that information. Pigeons race
from sunrise to sundowrt resting overnight. They may stop for
a drink, but not to eat staying in the air the entire time. The
pigeons biggest enemy is the hawk and high tension wires.
Both Katie and Bob agree that getting involved with a
hobby such as they have with their pigeons has been beneficial
in several ways. Katie used her knowledge and skills through-
out school for reports and speeches. Although fellow students
did tease her at times for
participating in such an "unique" activity, she continued developing her skills,
which resulted in good grades, interviews on television shows featuring pigeon
racing and a very close relationship with her father. Throughout the years, Bob
has shared his hobby with many groups of all ages. He stated, "... that getting
young kids involved in a hobby with nature, you don't have to worry about them
getting in trouble."

Check out the website,
www.pigeon.orgformoreinformationonpigeons.Coming up on Saturday,
January 8 at the American Legion in Hugo will be the Viking Racing Pigeon
Show and Auction starting at noon.
