Preserving the Post while Focusing on the Future November 1999 Father and Dal!~~!~!_~hare Interest in Pigeons -----..-----------.- J For the past 49 years, Centerville resident Bob Koran has been breeding, raising and racing pigeons. Bob grew up in the Frogtown area of St. Paul, where nearly everyone back then, in- cluding his father raised pigeons. He got seriously involved with the hobby at age 10. 17 year old Katie, Bob's daughter has been accompanying her father to Pigeon Club meetings since she's been 3 years old and is active in the day to day responsibilities of their 140 pigeons. The Koran's pigeons are from the Buritta pigeon family, dating back to 1910. Bob received his first Buritta pigeon in 1963 and have bred all of the pigeons from that family. Not only is the Buritta pigeon a beautiful bird, they are known for being good racers, which is what Bob and Katie expect from their birds along with endurance. Bob and Katie are members of the Vi- king Pigeon Club and have been win- ning a houseful of trophies, plaques and awards for their birds' racing skills. The pigeons are trained athlete's compared to the average pigeon that many of us are fa- miliar with. The Koran's exercise their racing cocks two times a day for an hour each time by taking them several miles away and letting them fly home to their loft. Each racing pigeons is identified by a band when they are 7 days old and can be identified by the American Racing Pigeon Union should they be- come lost.
