The Anoka County Community Health & Environmental Services Department is launching an effort to stop the sometimes deadly and debilitating disease. Beginning Tuesday, October 12, and continuing through Thursday, November 18, county residents can receive the influenza shot at a variety of public clinic locations. In addition, the Health Department will offer teta- nus/diphtheria booster shots and pneumococcal shots at the clinics. The pneumor:occal shots are rec- ommended for all persons over the age of 65 and others with certain health conditions. A donation of $10 is requested for fI u and pneumococcal shots; a donation of $5 is requested for the teta- nus/diphtheria shot. No appoint- ments are necessary. Anoka County Commissioner Margaret Langfeld recommends residents take advantage of these clinics, particularly those citizens who are most at risk. "The clinics are a cor. lient, low cost way to safeguard yourself from the un- pleasant and potentially harmful effects of the flu," Langfeld said. "Because the flu bug changes from year to year, persons at risk need to get a shot every year to be sure they are protected." {f "'5~ 2 Who should get the shot? The Anoka County Commun- ity Health & Environmental Ser- vices Department recommends a flu shot for anyone who falls into one of the following categories: * Persons over age 65. * Women who will be in their second or th i rd trimester of preg- nancy during the flu season. * People who live in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities which house people with chronic medical conditions. * Children and adults with seri- ous long-term health problems such as heart disease, anemia, diabetes, asthma, lung disease or kidney disease. Children must have a written parental consent in order to receive a shot. * Those who are less able to fight infections because of disease, such as HIV infection/AIDS, cancer, ete. * Anyone in close contact with people who are at risk for getting influenza. * Children over the age of six months who are in day care, youngsters in elementary and sec- ondary schools and college stu- dents (to prevent outbreaks). * People who are planning travel to the tropics, travel with large organized tourist groups, or travel to the Southern Hemisphere from April through September. * Anyone who wants to reduce their chance of catching influenza. cont page 3 I , i
