<br />Cr.; of C~..h....dl~ <br />Cont from page 2 <br />The influenza shot should not <br />be received by anyne who falls into <br />one of the following categories: <br />* Those who have had a serious <br />reaction to a previous influenza <br />shot. <br />* People who are moderately or <br />severely ill on the day of the shots <br />should wait until their symptoms <br />subside. <br />See your own doctor regard- <br />ing whether to receive a flu shot if <br />you are allergic to eggs or if you <br />have been paralyzed by Guillain- <br />Barre' Syndrome. <br />The flu season runs from early <br />December to late March. <br /> <br />Influenza is easily passed from <br />one person to another by "drop- <br />letsU expelled in the air by sneez- <br />ing, coughing, or even talking. <br />Direct contact with articles freshly <br />contaminated by these droplets <br />also contributes to the rapid spread <br />of influenza. <br />The disease can lead to seri- <br />ous illness, such as pneumonia, <br />influenza-related illness and even <br />death. Flu vaccine can prevent up <br />to 70% of hospitalizations and 85% <br />of deaths from flu related pneumo- <br />nia. Pneumonia and flu together <br />are the sixth leading cause of death <br />in the U.S. <br />Side effects from the shot are <br /> <br />cf...1I1999 I <br /> <br />mild, usually beginning soon after <br />the vaccine and lasting one to two <br />days.
