If you have questions on
your tax statement, please feel free to
contact City Hall. The City of
Centerville is required to certify its ini-
tial property tax ~\TY to Anoka County
by September 15. Once the lev:y is cer.
tified, the City has the ab~tY to lower
the levy prior to acioption in Decem-
ber, but the City can not raise the leyy
once it is initially certified. The City
had to make an educated guess this year
on the amouDt to be initially certified
toAnokaCounty. There were iwo maUl
reasons for the initial levy being set at
the current amount. One reason is that
the City ofCenterville had not received
a contract cost for pOlice serVices from
the Circ1e-PineslLexington Police De-
partment for 24 hour coverage. The
second reason was that the total tax
capacity of the City had not beeil de-
terminedby Anoka County, since they
are continually adding the Dewly con-
structed homes to their property tax
system. Without the knowledge of
these two items, the City elected to cer-
tify an inflated figure to Anoka County
to mak~ sure that the "operating costs
were covered in 1999. Now that the
City of Centerville has. received the
needed information, the City Staff and
City Council will be working to refine
the City budget and reduce the amount
of the initial1eyy to the amount actU-
ally needed for City operations in 1999.
Truth in taxation hearings will be held
in December to allow the City to detail
theannualbudget to interested citizens.
The school district,Anoka County and
other special taxing districts will also
be holding similar meetings.
