This campaign <br />.-in. ~ilJg motorists is ma"-irted to increase safety and reduce vehicle accidents <br />on our roads. Stops iDitiatecl for speed not only led to ~i. eitati.oDs. but also resulted <br />in citations being issued for driving without a valid driver's license violatioDs, insurance <br />vioIati~ drug and weapons charges, and warrant arrests. <br /> <br />In 2005 0WemUaJ Lakes police officers issued a total of637 citations for ~.. 'Ibis <br />total reflects a 76 percent inaase in such citations from 2004. This total does not <br />incIude situations wJ1en, the origiDal reason for the traffic stop was speed but other more <br />significant violations were ~1.11y charged. <br /> <br />Officers reacted to public input by directing speed enforcement in areas that were deemed <br />problem spots by residents. Officers also maintailJed a high visibility in school zones <br />when students were coming to aDd ftom school in an attempt to help avoid any traffic- <br />related incidents resu1tiDg from sp-o-ding or reckless motorists. <br /> <br />The Centennial Lakes Police Department utili7M two new state of the art "Stalker" dash- <br />mounted radar units in their enforcement efforts. 1bis new technology helps officers <br />perform with more accuracy aDd precision when attempting to single out a certain <br />violator from a large group of traffic. Two additional new radar units will be added in <br />early 2006. The majority of the Centennial Lakes Police fleet continues to use older, but <br />still functional, radar technology. Officers also have at their disposal a baDd-held speed <br />measuring laser device. <br />
