would be prudent to give a new employee a year or two of experience with the current
employees prior to taking over their duties. We are budgeting for the position at the mid-
point of the salary range. We would attempt to hire a new person at the starting level in
the salary range, with the caveat that we would not go any higher than mid -point without
specific authorization from the City Council.
Using the same salary allocation that we use for the two existing general public works
technicians, the first year cost of an new employee would be $34,600 for salary, FICA,
PERA, and cafeteria plan contributions.
The other adjustment to expenditures is minor, but important. We forgot to add the
inflation adjustment into the transfer for equipment replacement. This adds $2,667 to the
expenditure budget, an increase of 3% for equipment replacement purposes. Staff would
suggest a thorough review of anticipated equipment purchases as part of a review of our
capital budgets to determine the full effect of inflationary pressures and supply chain
issues for vehicles and equipment.
