City of Centerville <br />Work Session & City Council Meeting Minutes <br />October 25, 2023 <br />been extremely important along with recognizing staff. He stated that staff has served selflessly, 24-7 <br />and that the department wanted to show their support, recognition, and the importance of investing in <br />staff. He stated that the department has good equipment, needs to support, invest in their staff and their <br />jobs. He explained their chain of command; Lieutenants, Captains and Battalion Chiefs and pin some <br />new officers. <br /> <br />Mayor Love asked if Council had any specific questions, as this was presented as an Annual Report. <br />Council Member Koski stated that he was the Chair of the Fire Steering Committee and that the Chief, <br />staff, and the Operation Committee have stayed within their budget, he appreciated the staff and thanked <br />them for the jobs that they do. He stated that he has served on the Committee for approximately four (4) <br />years and very, very proud of the department. Chief Retka stated that the response time has shortened <br />immensely (1 minute-2 1/2 minutes) with the department and that they will continue to be fiscally <br />responsible. <br /> <br />Mayor Love thanked everything that has been completed with the department, along with all of staff’s <br />commitment, recognizing 911 every year, and thanking for being a part of the community and Centerville. <br /> <br />Chief Retka stated that Mr. Darrin Eckert, Battalion Chief for Station 1, would introduce staff from his <br />station that would be receiving pinning. Battalion Chief Eckert introduced Mr. Ryan Dion, stated that he <br />has been on the department for approximately 10 years, and was promoted to Lieutenant and his spouse <br />pinned his bars on. Battalion Chief Eckert also introduced Mr. Ryan Harris, stated that he has been on <br />the department for approximately 9 years, and was promoted to Lieutenant also. He was also pinned. <br />Chief Retka stated that these firefighters must gain trust with their crews and officers, participate in <br />intensive training and an interview process prior to being promoted. Chief Retka stated that Mr. Matthew <br />Montain, Battalion Chief for Station 3, would also introduce staff from his station that would be receiving <br />pinning. Battalion Chief Montain introduced Mr. Jacob Pfeffer, stated that he has been on the department <br />for approximately 3+ years, and was being promoted to Lieutenant also. Lieutenant Pfeffer’s spouse <br />pinned his bars on also. <br /> <br />Chief Retka introduced all of the Department’s Officers that were present: Battalion Chief Eckert, <br />Captain Wessman, Lieutenants Dion and Harris from Station 1 and Battalion Chief Montain, Captain <br />Weber, Lieutenants Wasiloski and Pfeffer for Station 3. He stated that the Mayor would be recognizing <br />those individuals that have retired from the Department who were present with proclamations of service: <br />Mr. Kevin Stewart and Mr. Steve Ruff. He read the proclamations that can be found on the City’s website <br />and presented them to the respective individuals. Mayor Love stated that other retirees who were <br />unavailable this evening that would be presented with proclamations were: Mr. Randy Lauderbaugh, <br />Ms. Kathy Peil, Mr. Jeff Reinsberg, Mr. Matt Long, Mr. Zach Seraphine, Tom Stephney, and Mr. Tim <br />Engle. Chief Retka stated that his Deputy Chief Mr. Matt Grantz was also in the audience and that he <br />could not complete his duties without him. <br /> <br />V. PUBLIC HEARINGS <br /> <br />1.
