His contract includes a 60-day notice clause which reads: "If the City Administrator decides to terminate employment, he will provide the City a minimum of 60 days' notice of his intent to terminate. " Administrator Statz has said he will honor this clause to the extent the City Council continues to find value in his employment. Should he continue through the full 60 days, his employment would end on February 17 (President's Day). Hiring a City Administrator is an important task and will have several decision points. The following outlines some of the relevant issues. We have also attached the League of Minnesota Cities' "Toolkit". Appointing an Interim Administrator The City Council may wish to appoint an Interim Administrator until the next City Administrator is hired. Options include: • Appointing the Assistant Administrator • Appointing the City Clerk • Hiring an Interim Administrator Appointing the Assistant Administrator Assistant City Administrator, Athanasia Lewis was hired in January of 2022. With three years of experience under her belt, she is well positioned to take on this role. One of the reasons for hiring an Assistant Administrator was to ensure there is a continuity of operations when the Administrator is unavailable or terminates their employment. Appointing the City Clerk Clerk Bender has over 25 years of experience and has been the interim administrator along with former Public Works Director, Paul Palzer on a couple of occasions when the Administrator was terminated.
