MEMO

TO: Honorable Mayor & City Council Members

FROM: Kim Stephan

SUBJECT: 2007 - 2008 City of Centerville Business Directory

DATE: November 2,2006

The Economical Development Committee had previously been instrumental in developing the
Centerville Business Directory which was funded through the EDC budget. As the EDC Staff Liaison
I worked on this project with the committee and Ms. Kim Wilcox, Media Junction. The EDC made the
decision in 2005 to opt for a bi-yearly directory, opposed to every year, which seems to have worked
well. At this time there are many additions, deletions and changes which can be made to an updated
directory. Over the last two (2) years I have kept track of the changes on the Web Site Business
Directory so it will not be too difficult to pass this information on to Ms. Wilcox. I asked Ms. Wilcox
if Media Junction would be able to do the Business Directory and she responded they would.

In the past Ms. Wilcox has contacted each business to see if they would be interested in advertising.
The advertising helps defray the cost of the directory. The listings themselves are free to the
businesses. I suggested the City send out the form Ms. Wilcox has used in the past to each business
since I have all the current business labels. This will also help defray the cost as it will cut down on
the time Ms. Wilcox needs to spend on this project. I would have the businesses return the forms to
Media Junction and Ms. Wilcox would do follow up calls on businesses that have not responded.
Attached is the form used in the past. The following information is from Ms. Wilcox.

As for advertising, here are the rates we used in 2005:

Logo
1/6 pg. Ad
1/3 pg. Ad
Coupon

$50
$75
$150
$150 (these are the coupons in the front of the book)

We then gave anyone who advertised an opportunity to have a free coupon in those insert pages that
we printed.

These are pretty much the rates that we've been using since the beginning, so I don't see any reason
why we can't up them a bit - especially since they are getting two years out of the directory now. In
2005 we were able to generate $1,300 in advertising revenue. Hopefully some of the new businesses
will be willing to advertise as welL I do think we're going to need to add another print page which
ends up adding 4 additional directory pages. We were pretty tight on room last time and with the

lto
