February 13,2004

To the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

I am writing the letter in support of the Clearwater Trail Project. The Hardwood Creek
Trail is of special interest to me since I like to bike from my home in Maplewood to Duluth via
the Willard Munger State Trail and would like to ride on a trail that is cleaner and safer than the
shoulder.

I also enjoy bike camping and spent four wonderful days biking from Brainerd to Park
Rapids using the new connector trail from the Heartland State Trail to the Paul Bunyan Trail this
past summer. Although dragging a tandem bike with a loaded BOB trailer through the .5 miles
of gravel on the unfinished portion of the trail was not a pleasant experience. When bike
camping, I always plan routes that are smooth, relatively flat and of longer distances. With the
completion of the Hardwood Creek Trail, riding to Duluth would be more enjoyable.

This past year, I biked over 5,500 miles. All of my vacations were focused around
biking. This summer I plan to participate in four multi-day rides. My favorite trails are the
Willard Munger State Trail, Cannon Valley Trail, Gateway State Trail, Harmony-Preston Valley
State Trail, Root River Trail and my favorite The Paul Bunyan State Trail. I do feel that the
Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail needs much updating.

I work in the health care profession and see all the monies that are spent on the
population who hasn't taken of themselves through exercise and healthy lifestyles. I believe
those of us who support healthy lifestyles deserve the same benefits though more recreational
trails and parks.

Please consider approving funds for the Clearwater Trail Project.

Sincerely,

Lucia Pierson
525 Sterling Street S.
Maplewood, MN 55119
chanteI525@aol.com

is
