April 22, 2003

Mary Capra
1810 Fox Run
Centerville, I\1N 55038

Dear Mary:

Thank you for your phone call tins morning. It is always good to get an update on Centerville' s
continuing work at implementing tile recommendations of the Minnesota Design Team. We
were very impressed during our 1998 visit by the community's commitment and dedication to
addressing some major development issues in Centerville, and your hard work since then
continues to be a testament to tIlatcommitment.

One of tile biggest assets tile Design Team saw in Centerville was tile concentration of historic
structures and character in "downtown." We recommended that a survey be done to determine
the significance of the remaining stmctures. But even without a survey, we recommended that
any improvements made in the core respect its scale, history and character. In our opinion,
Centerville is fortunate to still have a concentration of historic stmctures in its historic center,
and the Design Team considered that a real asset in creating an identity and sense of place in
Centerville. Also, with the respect for the community's history we witnessed, it seemed to us
that preservation of that history was (and continues to be) critical to tile future of Centerville.
Your community is fOltunate to still have some lnstoric resources to celebrate, and the Design
Team fully believed that it was (and is) possible to make street/lnghway and individual building
improvements that do not harm those resources. .,

With so may changes coming to smaller towns in Minnesota that threaten their historic fabric, it
continues to be the Design Team's hope that tile historic core of Centerville will be preserved
and enhanced. We encourage you to continue to "go the extra mile" to coordinate new
development with historic resources, and to celebrate your history. It is indeed what makes
Centerville unique.

Sinc~rely,

WUf~JiOU'-

Lucy Thompson
Minnesota Design Team Centerville Visit Co-Chair

cc: Penny Simison, Minnesota Design Team Centerville Visit Co-Chair

51
