Pedestrian Brid2e Over 135E Need
February 2, 2001, Centerville Park and Recreation, 651-429-3232, Wayne LeBlanc, 651-426-0168

The purpose of this plan is to illustrate the need for a pedestrian bridge across I35E about ~ mile south of the
highway 14 junction near Centerville. A beautiful trail has just been constructed in the Chain of Lakes Park
Reserve and will corinect to trails leading to Minneapolis and beyond. A trail in Hugo running north on highway 61
already exists and will continue to Duluth. Centerville has agreed to lead trails from the Chain of Lakes Park to
I35E and Lino Lakes and Hugo have agreed to lead a trail to I35E but what is needed is a pedestrian bridge to
connect these two great trail systems. The whole state will benefit from this connection. The map below, taken
from the Metropolitan Council "Regional Parks - A Map and Guide," shows the trail gap between Centerville and
Hugo. Large green dots indicate trails.

The map on the lower left shows a
detailed plan of Centerville trails.
A trail through the Chain of Lakes
Park to the left of "H" and around
the south end of Centerville Lake
to "I" and to Centerville Road is
complete. Centerville will
construct a trail through "J" and
"B" as property develops. Hugo
and Lino Lakes plan to construct a
trail to "A." But these small
communities cannot afford and
need help with a pedestrian bridge
between "A" and "B" to cross over
I35E.

Anoka County Parks supports this
plan and has included it in their
comprehensive plan. On Sep 25,
2000, people representing
Centerville, Hugo, Lino Lakes,
Anoka County Parks, St Paul
Water, and Washington County
Parks met and agreed to the plan.

The intersection ofI35E and
highway 14 will become a dense
commercial area with substantial
auto and pedestrian traffic. This
location was also considered for a
pedestrian bridge, but auto traffic
was deemed incompatible.

What is the best way to develop
this area properly? Is it possible to
allow safe pedestrian routes along .
with auto traffic in this area in
some ingenious way? Is there
funding available for planning and
for construction of a pedestrian
bridge to connect the right half of
Minnesota with the left half?

Contact: Wayne LeBlanc
wlcenterville@hotmail.com
651-426-0168
