Preliminary wastewater <br />and water systems studies have been completed and approval of the <br />overall plan is anticipated in 2001. Additional information is available at <br />http://www.missjewel.com <br /> <br />Education and Health Care <br /> <br />Independent School District 813 provides an excellent educational base <br />for the community with one elementary school, and one junior/senior <br />high school. The public school system administers early childhood <br />programs for pre-school and offers before and after school child care <br />programs. Community education classes are conducted during the <br />school year. St. John's Lutheran Parochial School serves students in K- <br />8th grade. The Lake City Public Library offers 20,000 volumes, <br />computers, video rental, and Internet access. The Library is a member <br />of SELCO, a cooperative system, and offers over one million volumes <br />through a 27-member regional library system via an on-line database. <br />Nine churches are located within the community, providing a broad <br />variety of denominations. <br /> <br />The Lake City Medical Clinic is part of the Mayo Health System which <br />constructed a new medical clinic in 1998. In 1999, a new 18-bed <br />hospital was connected to the Medical Clinic. The acute care facility <br />offers surgical, obstetrics, emergency care, home health care and <br />hospice services. Eight physicians and a general surgeon provide a wide <br />range of health care services. Lake City has three dental offices, four <br />chiropractic offices, and an optometrist. The Lake City Nursing Home is <br />also operated by the Mayo Health System and offers short and long <br />term rehabilitation. River Oaks Health Care Center offers private nursing <br />home care in a residential setting. <br /> <br />Recreation <br /> <br />Lake City and the school district maintain over 400 acres of parks, <br />beaches, ball fields, and tennis courts. The largest park is Hok-Si-La, a <br />250-acre park situated on Lake Pepin and offering camping, picnic <br />areas, a boat ramp, cross country skiing, swimming beach, shower <br />facilities, and shelters. The dining hall is often used for weddings and <br />other events. Patton Park is located in the town center and features <br />summer entertainment in the historic gazebo. Lighted ball fields, <br />athletic fields, playground equipment, picnic areas, fountains and art <br />may be found throughout the City's park system. The city operates a <br />summer recreation program for children including swimming programs <br />at the O'Neill public swimming pool. <br /> <br />Two semi-private 18-hole golf courses and one public 18-hole course <br />serve the area. Frontenac State Park, just north of Lake City, offers 40 <br />miles of groomed cross-country ski trails during the winter months and <br />hiking and camping in the summer months. Mount Frontenac, a ski <br />resort eight miles north of Lake City features a variety of ski runs. <br /> <br />One of the most anticipated community events is Water Ski Days, <br />sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. This year marks the 30th <br />Anniversary of the June festival. Johnny Apple Seed Days, held in <br />October is notable for many family events. Winterfest in February <br />features cross-country ski races, candlelight skiing, Snow Golf, Softball- <br />on-the-Ice, and snow art. <br /> <br />City Services <br /> <br />City functions are located in the historic City Hall, which is on the <br />National Register of Historic Places.
