June 28,2001 9:27 PM
sbi~mninter.net
Que$tion

Hello MaYi,

You were so helpful with our pork issue last Summer I thought I would run
our most rece.nt problem by you.

Since moving into our hDme (1847 Center Stre.et) we have experie.nced a
flood of water in our baCkyard each Spring. This Spring was extremely
bad. SD had that our basement flooded. We talked with our neighbors
(1833 Cente.r Street & 1825 Center Street) and they too had e.xtreme water
problems this Spring_

So my wife and I set out In early April to see if there was something
that could be clone to al/elliate this problem. We read books, contacted
the City of CenterviJ/e (Paul ?, the city planner) and had numerous
landscape desIgners give us their thoughts and quotes.

The City of Cenrervlfle told us to fill in our baCkyard and use drainage
tile to move rhe water to the back of our yard. From there the water
would drain across our neighhorsbac!<yard and into Q marshy area.

We took this plan ana presented it to 5 different landscape designers.
AJJ 5 said this planQf act;onwould not work. In fact all 5 said this
would only cause more problems for us and our neighhors. This option
would kill most of the trees on the western edge of our yard, but most
importanrly, if we build up our backyard there is a strong possibility
that instead of channeling the water away from our house we will be
sending it directly towards our house. The. engineers with the City" of
Centerville faile.d to notice that the area they want us to channel the
water to has Q higher elevation than our yard. Another issue with this
option pertains to 1825 Center Street, The water draining from the
surrounding homes eventually ends up in a marshy area adjacent to 7825
Center Street. As water fif/s this marshy area it: (foods into our
neighbors backyard.

The predominant solution offered by these land,~cQpers was to have a ditch
run across our backyards and into Cl sediment pond. We would then IJse
drainage tile to channel the water from our yards into that ditch. The
City of Crenterville owns wooded property that runs the extent of our
baCkyards. Therefqre we are asking the City of Centerville to fLlnd part
of this project. Mainly the ditch running the length of our yards and
also somewhere for the overflow to go besides into the backyard of 1825
Center Street.

There is a drainage ditch that runs from Centerville Road to
ClPproximar:ely half way up the nonhern portion of Center Street then

1
