Switcher/DVE
The switcher is the heart of the production truck. All signals are routed into it, and it selects
the final program signal. Staff has been researching digital switchers through trade
magazines, the internet, our vendors and at the NAB conference. There are several varieties
we are looking at. The important aspects for us are that it be digital, the number of inputs and
whether it has a built in DVE. By purchasing a switcher with a built in DVE we can save up to
$25,000 over buying the two pieces of equipment separately.

Digital Cameras with Triax Cabling
For the truck to be true digital we will need digital cameras. To maximize the production
capabilities of our truck a minimum of four cameras is required.

Instead of purchasing the typical multi-pin cable, we recommend triax cable. It is more
compatible with the industry standard, lighter, and easier to maintain than multi-pin cable.
Whenever we have a problem with our current multi-pin cable we have to ship it out for repair.
Each time we have to ship cables out it takes one to two months to get them back, and it's
expensive. With triax cable, we will be of capable in-house repair.

Digital AudioNideo Routers and Distribution Amplification System
This equipment will give us maximum input/output flexibility for mobile productions. This will
allow us to route any audio and/or video source to any destination without having to
disconnect or rewire any equipment.

RTS Intercom System
This is the equipment that ties the whole van shoot together. It includes the wiring, headsets,
receivers, and microphones that allow the director to communicate with camera operators and
announcers. You can't do a van shoot without it.

If all of the equipment is purchased, simultaneously, through one vendor it is possible to get
discounts of up to 10% of the total equipment cost. This could be a significant savings for us.

Summary
The equipment purchases outlined in this plan will complete our goals of eliminating the Amiga
computers, upgrading master control, moving us to the digital format, and outfitting us with a
very high quality, flexible mobile production facility.

This report outlines the major equipment replacement needs we face both now and in the
future. Other equipment such as portable cameras, tripods, etc. will also need to be
purchased wIlen the current equipment breaks.

Our purchase plans are based on best-case scenarios that include adequate finances and the
inclusion of master control upgrades in the franchise renewal. Economics will dictate our
move into the digital world.

13
