<br />1 Meal Break - Employees working eight or more consecutive <br />hours will be authorized an unpaid meal break. <br /> <br />2 Rest Break - When working under conditions where the use of <br />a rest break is practical, employees will be allowed to take a <br />fifteen-minute break approximately midway through each four- <br />hour shift. The time of the break is subject to the approval of <br />the supervisor. Unused rest breaks may not be accumulated, <br />nor may they be used for any purpose other than a mid-shift rest <br />period. Unused rest breaks may not be used to leave work <br />early. <br /> <br />6.5 Job Sharing <br /> <br />Job sharing will be considered on an individual basis at an employee's request. <br />Any agreement between an employee and supervisor is subject to approval by <br />the Council. <br /> <br />6.6 Overtime <br /> <br />The City recognizes some employees may be required to work extra hours in <br />emergency situations and during unexpected peak workload periods. The <br />scheduling and payment of overtime will be in accordance with the applicable <br />Fair Labor Standards Act and the following: <br /> <br />A. Non-ExempJ Employees - Non-exempt employees shall be <br />compensated for work their supervisor requires them to undertake <br />in excess of a forty-hour workweek. Hours taken as sick leave, <br />vacation leave, or holidays are not considered hours worked for the <br />purposes of computing a forty-hour work week. The compensation <br />shall be paid at one and one-half times their regular rate of pay. <br />The Employee shall be compensated for any overtime worked in <br />the same pay period it is earned. <br /> <br />B. Exempt Employees - Exempt employees shall not be granted <br />overtime compensation. However, exempt employees also shall <br />not be denied compensation for any absence of less than one day, <br />since the employee is presumed to work forty hours per week, <br />some during the regular workday, and some outside those hours. <br /> <br />C. Overtime Authorization - Overtime should be avoided but when it <br />is necessary, the City Administrator must give specific approval <br />prior to its being earned. Pre-authorization may be presumed by <br />employees in emergency situations such as excess snowfall, flood, <br />severe storms, water main breaks, lift station malfunctions, or other <br />similar situations where the immediate response of staff is required <br /> <br />12 <br />
