Senior Housing Update

The Centerville City Council is
considering a proposal to purchase four
acres of land near the downtown area for
a future senior housing site. The advan-
tages of the site are convenient location,
adjacent water and sewer utilities, ample
size and good condition of the property. If
a purchase agreement is reached, the City
would continue to work with Anoka
County Housing and Redevelopment
Authority (HRA), its consultants, and
local volunteers in developing a final
design.
The 1996 market study for the project
recommended cottage style housing,
although it is currently not feasible due to
high construction costs. An alternative
sty Ie that is more affordable is a 16-unit,
one-story apartment building that in-
cludes a community room for seniors.

This design was presented at an informa-
tional meeting in December and received
a favorable response from many of the
senior citizens in attendance. Currently,
city staff receives about five phone calls
per week for information about senior
housing.
The City Council decided to make
senior housing a priority at a recent
strategic planning session; however, it is
unlikely that any construction would
begin in 1997.
