TO: Jerry 5tre1d1
SUbject: cub scout rocket launch

Chief Streich,

On behalf of the Centervllle cub Scout Pack 432- I am trying to organIze our annual rocket launch. ThIs year I would like
to hold It at laMotte park In Centervllle. I asked the city council about this and It looks as though It may be In violation of
a city ordInance (although the ordInance I was told we would violate would be In the loitering and dIscharge of firearms
section - which doesn't make sense to me) I will assume that the ordinance we need to worry about Is the one about
fireworks. The city Is having me fill out a special events permit application. Part of that application has to do with
obtaining a fire dept. permit if we have fireworks or pyrotechnics.

Our event will consist of 15C20 kids (and a sImilar number of parent spectators/supervision) shooting off standard type
kids model rockets (the kinds you find In any hobby store). They use engines that emit a small flame (and Inch or 2) for
about 2 seconds (for a majority ofthat 2 seconds the rocket is already clear of the ground). The launch pad has a metal
plate that the rocket shoots against and the plate is about 6" off the ground - so the flame never actually touches the
ground. We also typically place a 4'x41 sheet of plywood (or the like) under the launch pad. We would like to have the
fiexlblllty to launch as desalbed from grassy areas - but would certainly shoot from the dirt/day basebaillnfleld If that is
what you preferred.

We also have a picnic in which a couple of parents will bring a gas grill and we grill hamburgers and hotdogs. We plan to
place the grills on the concrete apron that surrounds the main pavilion at laMotte park.

I guess my question to you Is do we need some sort of fire dept. permit for this sort of event? And If so, what do I need
to do to obtain that?

If you have any other question please feel free to contact me.

Thanks

TOM NELSON
Senior structural Designer
Ericksen Roed .
