MINNESOTA IDENTIFIES FIRE PROBLEM
Each year the MN State Fire Marshals Office collects information from
the 788 fire departments within the State of Minnesota through the F'
Minnesota Fire Incident Reporting System (HEIRS). Once the fire
~~,
department leaves the scene they enter information into MFIRs such RF.
as the type of call, occupancy type, area of the fire, cause of the fire and alike.
In 2007 (the most recent data), 746 of the 788 fire departments across the state
reported data. This data collectively identifies the fire problem within Minnesota.
That data is then sent to the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS)
which details our national problem from fire departments across the country.
For the past several years COOKING has been the leading cause of all fires in
Minnesota. 74% of all the incidents occurred in a residential structure. The most
common reason for the fires was leaving the kitchen when something was on the
stove or in the oven. The second leading cause was heating-related fires such as
combustibles too close to space heaters and chimney fires due to lack of mainte-
nance. In fact, 62% of all heating fires occurred in chimneys and fireplaces.
WELL WATER WISE WEEK ~~~"~~~
ment is authorized to enforce the City's Code and you could be cited or your
MENT YOU AREVIOLATING CITYCODE...
You are also adding to the sediment buildup in local drainage ponds and contrib-
utes nutrients that cause the algae that blooms in our lakes. Please dispose of
these items at the compost sites listed on Page 3 or place other items in your
yard or driveway.
Inclose third are Incendiary fires (i.e. Arson), These are fires that are intentionally
set to cause damage to property andlor harm someone. Arson commonly remains
in the top three of all causes. In previous years it has been on top. Arson cases
are increasing as the economy falls and puts emergency responders and the com-
munity at risk at the very least. What use to be used only to heat our food and
keep us warm, is now being used like a knife or gun.
The majority of the fire cases that fire departments respond to are predictable and
preventable. Taking time to conduct a hazard analysis of your residence will
greatly reduce your risk of a fire occurring within your home. If you have further
questions regarding this article, please call the Centennial Fire District at (651) 784-
7472. Information was provided by: Fire Chief Jerry Streich.
