City of Centenlille Goals Adopted lll/ay 23, 2001 THE PROCESS Council began a process in January to define the goals for the City. Councilmembers Mary Nelson, Dick Travis, Mary Capra, ancl:pm Swedberg initially met on December 28 with Jim March, Paul Palzer, Paul Montai1',1e,! Ray Devine and Wayne LeBlanc at the Public Works Conference Room. Each pehlon described their vieli'vs of important projects, ideas, and goals for the City. In January, Jim March summarized the initial meeting and Council identified several priority areas from all of the suggestions. Council me! in workshop on January 31 and formulated the original priority goals presented to the committees in February as follows: . Council wants advice on commuraicatioi1l methods. Council will form an Ad Hoc committee Chaired by Theresa Brenner to make recommendations on Websites, newsletters, cable television, document archival, document imaging, and surveying citizens for their needs. The Council will ask for citizen members from . the computer, journalism, and graphics a,1s fields for their advice and counsel. Citizen participation is a must and }J,.d Hoc committees are ideal for those who cannot commit extended time. The City must provide information in advance Tor citizens to participate and we need methods to facilitate citizen opinion once preliminary information has been distributed. Also linked with this discussion, will be items we need to clariPj and explain about City procedures and processes so the information can be presented to the citizens. . Ecolllomic lJeveiopmei1lt is an urgent issue. Council wants professional advice on design criteria for the commercial properties east of 20th .I~veflue towards lhe freeway and help with old town renovations. We want to get ahead of the development cunle that Council views as accelerating. Along with this would be topics ranging from what type of commercial activities do we want, how can we provide a business environment that welcomes new business and retains existing business, in a prosperous community. Are there opportunities that the City can leverage into successful commercial development? ". Parks a;-nil:! recreati<m is another area identified by Council. items mentioned are youth recreation programs, traii and pedestrian access linking public facilities and neighboring communities including a plan for Main Street, improvements at La Motte Parl< induding a range of items from skateboarding, concession buildings, electrical improvements. Council keeps the option or a Community Center as a longer-term goal, but it is not viable in this 2-vear window. Perhaps the biggest challenge in recreation is which model will Centerville adopt to provide opportunities ror our citizens. One model is YIVICAJ80ys and Girls Clubs.
