A young, newly licensed driver runs a red light, hits a vehicle and the driver dies. <br />In court and through work with Victim Services both offender and victim's family agreed to <br />mediation. Emotions mn deep during mediation and the time was meaningful for everyone. <br />The accident was explained and sorrow expressed Family members were able to talk about <br />their griif and how thry would move fOrward while not fOfJ,et/ing the trage4Y. The mediation <br />ended with a plan fOr all to keep in touch. <br /> <br />Students To School Program - Reducing Truancy This program is <br />designed to bring the parents of elementary-age students whose children are <br />experiencing high rates of absenteeism together with school personnel to work <br />out a plan to get kids to school regularly. Mentors may be assigned to families <br />to help implement the agreed upon plan. There were 98 cases opened. 13 <br />mediations took place, 1 mentor was placed and of cases mediated, every case <br />reached agreement. Volunteers and staff assisted 450 to improve children's <br />futures. <br />. Two brothers had a sen"es of unexcused absences and tardiness. DHn"ng case <br />develupment it was discovered that the family knew very little English. It was necessary to <br />communicate in Spanish and an interpreter was needed fOr a successful mediation to take <br />place. In mediation, the ftmily said that the ahsences were unexcused because the parents felt <br />unable to use tbe call-in line to report the absence due to the language barrier. Part of the <br />agreement was that the parents would call in and report the absence directly to the office staff <br />The interpreter explained the imparlance of attending school daily fOr educational and social <br />reasons. Four months later the b'!Js had not missed one day. <br /> <br />In Their Own Words... <br />Clients are asked following mediation to evaluate sexvices from the paid staff to <br />volunteer mediators. 98% of clients express a high degree of satisfaction with <br />our staff and services and indicate they would use mediation again. While most <br />mediation will end in agreement, Mediation Services does not assume that <br />mediation must end in an agreement to be successful. Clients often report that <br />other benefits of mediation include improved relationships and increased <br />communication. The potential of community mediation is to prevent <br />situations from escalating into violence by offering a safe and respectful forum <br />for discussion of difficult issues and teaching skills to avoid future conflict. <br />.
