<br />HKGi's planning philosophy provides the foundation for the firm's approach <br />to every project to which we contribute. Several principles inform this <br />philosophy. <br /> <br />Effective public parlidpation and consensus building is essential. <br />Critical to the success of each HKGi project is the participation of the <br />community in the plarming process. We believe that without the local <br />knowledge that City officials and residents bring to the project, no amount <br />of professional expertise will yield a wholly satisfactory solution. HKGi is <br />the leader in the use of a consensus building approach that blends the <br />creativity of the public and decision makers with professional plarming <br />expertise. Communities seek our guidance because of our ability to resolve <br />conflict and build consensus. We are frequently asked to facilitate in difficult <br />problem solving circumstances. <br /> <br />Planning must recognize the unique charaderistics of each place. <br />HKGi employs a unique approach termed "place appropriate" plarming <br />and design that builds on already existing natural, historical and cultural <br />characteristics and patterns to serve as the framework for planning. This <br />approach reveals the strengths that already exist in the City to serve as the <br />building blocks for community image and identity. <br /> <br />Implementation must be considered at every step. <br />HKGi employs a strategic planning approach that links plans with solutions. <br />We have no interest in producing plans that will lay dormant on a shelf. <br />Our interest is to find creative and affordable ways to make the right things <br />happen. <br /> <br />Planning integrates built and natural systems <br />HKGi is a recognized national leader at weaving natural systems such as <br />stormwater infiltration and native habitat corridors into a community's <br />development pattern. Preserving or restoring a web of natural systems, <br />even in seemingly small ways, plays an important functional role in reducing <br />infrastructure investment, providing places for wildlife, providing <br />recreational opportunity and enhancing the quality of life for the <br />community. <br /> <br />Planning must explore the possibilities. <br />HKGi also employs a unique procedural approach to planning that involves <br />the formulation of concept plan alternatives that paint a variety of big <br />picture or broad brush solutions that are tied to natural and historical <br />patterns.
