<br />As its name implies, the Gateway District is the "front door" to the Detroit <br />Lakes commercial core. However, a disorienting array of buildings and a <br />lack of greenery and pedestrian amenities has led to an entrance that lacks <br />in both identity and visual appeal. The planned relocation of Highway 10, <br />however, has offered the city the opportunity to reinvent this important <br />area through the redevelopment process. <br /> <br />The Master Plan developed by HKGi and Bonz/REA would re-establish <br />the area as an easily identifiable entrance to the city that invites both <br />automobile traffic and pedestrian activity. Green space connections, rain <br />water gardens, streetscaping, public plazas and gathering spaces, street <br />realignments, and redevelopment situated at the street front will provide <br />a greater pedestrian orientation.
