CHAPTER 2
POPULATION AND LAND USE CONSIDERATIONS
2.1 HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT TRENDS
Historic population data for the City of Centerville was obtained from the City of Centerville and
the Metropolitan Council. The City started experiencing dramatic growth during the 1980s. This
growth trend is expected to continue throughout the next 15 to 20 years.
Table 2 -1 presents historical data regarding the City of Centerville's total population, number of
households, and service connections. As is commonly the case in rural communities such as
Centerville, not everyone within the city limits is connected to and served by the City's water
system (due to the use of private wells). In fact, not everyone with a service connection uses the,
City's water. There are a number of customers who are provided with connections, but who ugh
private wells as their source of water. These customers will be added to the City's water systepi
over time, as repair or reconstruction of private water systems are not allowed by the City where
municipal water is availablep The total population and household data was used to determine the
average number of people living in each household, which, along with the number of service
connections, was in turn used to find the total number of people served by City water. The data
indicates that, while the total population and number of service connections is increasing, the
number of persons per connection is decreasing slightly. This is a trend that is occurring
throughout the Twin Cities metro area at this time.
TABLE 2 - 1.
