MEMO
DATE : January 8, 1999
TO : Honorable Mayor and Council
FROM : Jim March
RE : Lessard Property Floodway Update
I spoke to Tom Peterson in regards to what would need to be done to shrink the floodway near
the Joyce Greene property and the proposed kindergarten facility off of 20th Avenue. If the
floodway area was reduced, this would allow the City to continue to pursue the purchase of the
Lake Area Utility building for a potential public works facility /police sub - station. As we have
previously discussed, the Lake Area Utility building is completely in the floodplain and a large
portion is in the floodway. Our City ordinances require that a property owner can not split a lot
with a building site in the floodway, if the site is not large enough to rebuild a building site on the
same parcel out of the floodway.
Tom Peterson has a map showing the floodway along the creek corridor in this location. 1 asked
Mr. Peterson to look into the feasibility of asking for a letter of map amendment, with calculated
related costs and steps that need to be taken to accomplish this task. Mr. Peterson is planning to
bring this information to the meeting.
