Considerations for
The Centerville City Council and
The Parks and Recreation Committee
Regarding Parks, Trails, and Lakes
To: Centerville City Council
Parks and Recreation
From: Parks, Trails, and Lakes group, Design Team Volunteers
Date: February 3, 1999
Design Team Volunteers interested in Parks, Trails, and Lakes have met several times. In the most recent
meeting, the group met with the Parks and Recreation committee and city administrator, Jim March, to
learn of their plans and to ask questions related to parks, trails, and lakes. The group wants to thank Parks
and Recreation and Jim March for their time and outpouring of information.
The Parks, Trails, and Lakes group has formulated some recommendations for your consideration. The
group sees many opportunities and they want to be sure these opportunities do not get away. The group
has done its best to think of the community as a whole, and put forward suggestions that are both desirable
and doable. These items were developed just after the joint meeting with the Parks and Recreation
committee, and they should fit well with the current plans of Parks and Recreation. Before getting into the
more extensive lists, here are the time critical recommendations most applicable to the City Council and
Parks and Recreation.
SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITIES THAT NEED IMMEDIATE ATTENTION (marked **
below):
A.Application for Cooperative Trail grant for Anoka Park connection to Lamotte Park. Due in
February (see below, #1 under Trails).
B.Acquisition of Water Utility property near Lamotte Park to enhance the Park with lakshore
and a possible fishing pier (see below, #1 under Lakes)
C.Acquisition of downtown lake property to provide a "town square" along the lines of the
Design Team drawing (see below, #5 under Trails, and #2 under Lakes).
D.Park equipment grants (see below, #1 under Parks)
E.Park grants. (see below, #2 under Parks)
F.MnDOT help and/or funding with landscaping - this may not need immediate attention, but
early application can't hurt (see below, #4 under Parks).
C.Again, the Parks, Trails, and Lakes group offers the city their assistance in any way possible
to help bring about the goals mentioned below. We may have people who might help draft
applications, volunteer to help with planting, etc.
Below are roughly prioritized separate lists for Trails, Lakes, and Parks. Those items marked with a **
are the items above that are described in more detail below, and these items are deemed most important to
discuss with the City Council and Parks and Recreation now.
Trails
I.**Connect the Anoka Park trail to Lamotte Park.
The current drawing of Lamotte Park does not show a trail connection, but in the meeting with Parks and
Recreation, the obvious first priority is to connect the Anoka Park trail with the Lamotte Park parking
lot. This would be a trail on the western side of Lamotte Park from the south end to the parking lot at
the north end. From there, the trail might go east, in an eventual connection to the Centerville
Interceptor easement and/or north possibly through or on the edge of the church property to the heart
