CAESAR
Director Business Admin.
1999 Mosquito Control District Activity Recap
City of Centerville — Lino Lakes Township
Background
Due to high levels of customer calls and increased population density, Lino Lakes township and
the city of Centerville are now in what MMCD considers a Priority One service area.
Essentially, this means residents are given a full range of services including control of larval
mosquitoes and adult mosquitoes as conditions and treatment thresholds warrant. Emphasis is
placed on larval control in the Chain of Lakes park area just west of Centerville. Mosquitoes
from this area directly impact people living in Centerville. Monitoring for encephalitis- bearing
mosquitoes is routine. Centerville is not considered a high risk area, however, a case of
mosquito -borne encephalitis was reported in nearby Blaine in 1997.
Mosquito Control - Larval
• Ground sites (less than three acres) in Centerville were treated as condition warranted
two times with 30 -day methoprene pellets. Total number of sites =1,351
• All air sites (greater than three acres) were checked nine times and treated with bti if
found to be breeding mosquitoes. Total number of sites =107
• Cattail mosquito treatments were made at Lake Peltier and Chain of Lakes Park using 30-
day pellets.
Mosquito Control — Adult
• Neighborhoods were fogged three times during 1999 with resmethrin in response to
complaints about mosquitoes.
• MMCD responded to all customer calls in Centerville. Individual properties were treated
by backpack using permethrin in cases where treatment thresholds were met.
Biting Gnat Control
• Control of biting black flies continues on the Rum, Crow, and Mississippi Rivers.
• MMCD does twice - weekly collections of adult black flies to determine density, and
continues to monitor small streams in the area for the presence of one aggressive human
biting species.
Lyme disease tick surveillance
• MMCD maintains three tick surveillance sites in and around Centerville. Staff collect
ticks from trapped rodents in order to monitor the distribution of Lyme ticks.
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION EMPLOYER
0 Printed on recycled paper containing at least 15% posbconsumer paper fibers
