POSITION SUMMARY - The Community Service Officer <br /> O <br /> Prevention Officer (CPO) is a non -sworn uniformed position. The CSO/CPO <br /> is required to work under varying conditions with different members of <br /> the Department and the communities. The CSO /CPO is responsible for <br /> providing police services not requiring a sworn officer, and providing <br /> back up office coverage when necessary. The CSO /CPO must possess a <br /> demonstrated knowledge of state statutes and local ordinances <br /> including, but not limited to, health and nuisance ordinances. The <br /> CSO /CPO coordinates the Department's Crime Prevention Program, and is <br /> responsible for developing and implementing crime prevention programs <br /> in the business district and neighborhoods. The CSO /CPO presents 'Safety <br /> programs to local schools, provides safety instruction end education to <br /> youth and community members, " Qom.completes other duties as directed. <br /> Working conditions vary with physical effort being light to moderate, <br /> physical environment fair to poor, and physical hazards minimal to <br /> moderate. May be confronted with unpredictable situations involving <br /> aggressive or possibly dangerous individuals and animals. <br /> The CSO /CPO typically has a high school diploma, is in the process of <br /> completing, or has completed, a two year degree in law enforcement, and <br /> has a Crime Prevention Certificate. The CSO /CPO typically reports to <br /> the Deputy Chief, unless otherwise directed. <br /> E. TYPICAL DUTIES <br /> 1. COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER: <br /> a. Animals - investigates and enforces local ordinances and <br /> state statutes relating to domestic and wild animals includ- <br /> ing, but not Limited to. dogs barking, animals running at <br /> largo, licensing, animal bites, inoculations, dead animals, <br /> injured wildlife, animal abuse, and unwanted animals. <br /> -46- <br />
