Park and RecreatiowMay - 5 - > 1999
Network Committee was looking for. Mr. Larson expressed interest in putting in a shelter
at the Tracey McBride Park also.
Mr. Terry Sweeney explained hethought =the Neighborhood "Network Committee was
trying to go with the "old town" feel or theme that the Design Team suggested. This is
where the Neighborhood Network Committee came nix with the name "gazebo ".
Mr. Steve Brown expressed he would like to see a shelter Large enough to hold family
gatherings and picnics. He also mentioned the -whole purpose for the Acorn Parr is
geared for families and adults in a quieter atmosphere. Other parks such as LaMotte Park
are geared for more athletic purposes. Mr. Brown also stressed that there. is
approximately 50 feet of shoreline that is open for public use. He still has problems with
children walking through his property as-they make - their way around the-pond. These
kids need to understand this is private property, and a lot of the homeowners are getting
upset with the traffic behind their houses at all hours -of the day and night.
Mr. Larson stressed again that this park should be able to be used by all ages - both young
and old. Mr. Larson distributed a tetterfrom Mari Nelson which also requested a park be
designated for adults, with a quieter more peaceful atmosphere.
Mr. Sweeney suggested the City put in-a retaining wall and possibly do some landscaping,
maybe even adding trees. The trees would act as a sound barrier, and in a sense, separate
the park into two. The play area would-be separate from the shelter area, giving it the
effect of two different parks. Mr. Sweeney mentioned that children play and fish in the
pond all of the time, adding, in the winter they slide down the hill onto the pond.
Mr. Porter questioned where the funds will come from to pay for all of these suggestions.
Both Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Brown explained the -funds will be coming from the grant the
City has applied for offered by the County. With this grant the county will grant
$50,000.00 to the City, and the City will-in turn-match $50000.00 giving a total of
approximately $100,000.00.
Mr. Sweeney stressed the importance of upkeeping the -City parks. The parks would be
used a lot more by our residents if they were kept up better. The grass needs to be
fertilized and weed killer needs to be used. Mr. Sweeney suggested hiringa schoot aged
person to oversee the upkeeping and maintenance of the parks.
Mr. Porter suggested hiring an intern.
Ms. Lien offered this person could also be carried over into the fall and winter with the
warming house at LaMotte Park. The warning house needs someone to oversee the
maintenance, scheduling and general running once winter arrives. Possibly, this person
could stay on all year.
2
