CITY OF CENTERVILLE
PARK & RECREATION COMMITTEE
MINUTES
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1995
Attendees: Thompson, Navin, Larson, Bisek, and Zoff Pelton, and CC Buckbee
Approval of Minutes
Amend approval of minutes for September 6, 1995 to read: Second By Larson. Motion by Navin, second
by Larson. Passed.
Appearances
1. Nancy Johnson called and is unable to attend due to family illness. Please reschedule her appearance
for the November meeting. Also, please send her the full packet for the November meeting as well as the
minutes for the past year, the 1995 P & R and PW budget, and the Park and Pedestrian System
Comprehensive Plan.
Note to Staff: please distribute copies of the P &R portion of the CIP to all members for the November
meeting to replace the draft version in their Comprehensive Plan.
2. Carl Sarrion, North Metro Recreation attended. He distributed the most current program flyer which
included Girls Pitching Clinic, Flag Football, Floor Hockey, Afterschool Basketball, Friday Evening
Basketball, Snowmobile Safety, Adult Country Westem Dance, Aerobic Exercise, Holiday Aerobics and
Family Fun Nite.
He also distributed the North Metro Recreation Program Status Report, dated October 4, 1995, which
listed attendance by program to date. Bill and Dale suggested that they would like to see the breakdown
by Centerville participants and that the other cities may find this information useful too.
Carl said that NMR programs offer lower cost programming than most of the organized sports in the area.
Bill suggested that perhaps NMR obtain funding from local businesses who might sponsor a sport or team.
Carl said that due to limited staff this has not been pursued, but could be in the future.
Sanna reported that at the last Council meeting, Marty Asleson from Lino Lakes approached Centerville,
as well as Shoreview, Circle Pines and Lexington, to develop a recreation facility in southern Lino Lakes.
The P & R felt that this type of cooperation could extend to recreation programming as well. It was
agreed that Centerville should have an active representative on the NMR Commission and that one of the
first issues we should bring to the table is to consider inviting Lino Lakes to join the NMR. We feel all of
the communities would benefit by cooperative rather than competitive efforts in the area of recreation
programming, as well as site development.
Motion by Bisek, second by Zoff Felton to recommend to the CC to continue membership in the North
Metro Recreation Commission. Passed, Thompson "Nay."
Dale volunteered to represent Centerville on the NMR Commission. The next meeting is tentatively
scheduled for next Tuesday. Tuesday is bad for Dale due to a conflict with the Fire Dept. meetings. Carl
suggested that Thursdays are an option. He will get back to Dale with a meeting date and time, All P &
R members agreed to be available if Dale could not attend a meeting.
Old Business
