There will be a City clean -up followed by
a program at Wargo Nature Center. Centerville Lion's will be having their Easter Egg Hunt
on the same morning at Laurie LaMotte Park.
* A meeting was held with representatives from Waste Management yesterday. A City-
wide "Clean -Up Day" has tentatively been scheduled for Saturday, May 20th. This is a new
item in our refuse contract with Waste Management. This item will be on the next City
Council agenda. The pick -up could be held at the public works site. Residents could drop
off virtually all types of items at no charge to them. The City would pay for the actual
disposal costs as quoted in our contract. The residents that had items that did not sell at
Garage Sale Days could bring those items for disposal the same day. Waste Management
would mail a notice out to all of the residents in the community announcing the event with
Council approval.
* I had the chance to speak in person with Socrates "Socco" Babacus on Wednesday
evening. There were approximately 125 people in attendance at the Lakes Area Business
Association meeting. Socco spoke about free parking, Socco pop and Socco hot dogs ($2
or less), the retractable roof, ample parking, etc... There were no actually plans on
display. He indicated that he is breaking ground on July 1. The majority of the crowd was
Forest Lake business owners that had a pro- stadium attitude. There were several
Centerville and Lino Lakes residents in attendance that were in protest of a proposed
stadium. Socco seemed less than professional and was very rude and confrontational
when asked serious questions by the public. When I spoke to him one on one after the
public hearing, I asked him when he plans to start the environmental impact statement for
the project. He said that the environmental requirements had been waived and if Lino
Lakes tried to nickel and dime him, then he would cancel the project. It is my opinion that
he is not legitimate and this project will not be proceeding. I spoke to Lino Lakes
Administrator Linda Waite Smith this morning. She laughed when I told her that Socco had
said that he had the environmental requirements waived. She said that they still have not
heard anything from him.
4 /7/00
