Pick up your free native plant and learn how to protect <br /> our waters starting in your own yard. Take a walking tour of 16 raingardens at 3:30 or 5:30 <br /> p.m. Look for the the big Expedition: Blue Planet bus near the park building at 34th Street and <br /> 15th Avenue to find rubber ducky races that teach us about water pollution and talk to local <br /> water experts - and possibly meet Alexandra Cousteau. <br /> About Expedition Blue Planet 2010 <br /> This event is the first stop on the Expedition: Blue Planet. In July, Alexandra Cousteau and her <br /> international Expedition Blue Planet team will depart on a 14,500 -mile journey across North <br /> American to investigate global water issues and u se social n.edia" <br /> 9 9 to " bring "thrifi of adventure -- <br /> and the wonders of nature to audiences across the globe. In the second year of producing its <br /> "new media" projects, Blue Legacy has partnered with the National Geographic Society to <br /> develop and deliver an innovative 138 -day, 14,500 mile exploration of water issues across the <br /> US and Canada. Combining "live" production of stories in the field with social media <br /> engagement, a coordinated local and national press tour, curriculumaligned classroom <br /> materials, and a significant catalog of online information, the 2010 Expedition is designed to <br /> engage a mainstream audience in a meaningful discussion on critical water issues. Live <br /> community events along the tour route will feature celebrity performances, fundraisers for <br /> local watershed projects and opportunities for families to get involved in restoring and <br /> protecting watersheds. There are over 50 Blue Thumb partner <br /> organizations in the mid -west, including local governmental units, non - profit and community <br /> organizations, and nursery and landscape professionals. Collectively, Blue Thumb partners <br /> have launched thousands of individual and community planting for clean water projects <br /> throughout the region. <br /> About Metro Blooms <br /> The July 4 event at Powderhorn Park will showcase the efforts of one Blue Thumb partner, <br /> Metro Blooms. Metro Blooms' mission is to strengthen communities by promoting eco- friendly <br /> gardening that beautifies neighborhoods and protects our environment. 5000 people have <br /> attended Metro Blooms raingarden workshops since these workshops began in 2005. <br /> Metro Blooms will work with community members to install 100 - 150 raingardens as part of <br /> an effort to improve water quality on Powderhorn Lake in Minneapolis.
