Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities <br />• Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, drawings, specifications, <br />plans and maps. Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and interpretation of <br />construction services to others. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints <br />from customers, department staff, City Council, members of the business community <br />and other agencies and organizations. Ability to write correspondence. <br />• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole <br />numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to work with formulas in the <br />calculation of area, volume and percentages. Ability to work with metric measures, <br />specifically the ability to convert from metric to standard measurements. <br />• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. <br />Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or <br />diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to read and <br />understand construction blueprints and specifications relating to public utilities and <br />streets. <br />• Thorough working knowledge of various trades and engineering methods /practices, <br />CAD and GIS. <br />• Knowledge of the City Code. <br />• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures. <br />• Conflict management and resolution skills. <br />• Ability to work with various forms of mathematical calculations. <br />• Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for construction projects. <br />• Ability to evaluate job - related problems and develop /recommend solutions. <br />• Ability to work with outside contractors, the public and co- workers. <br />• Ability to work flexible hours when necessary to facilitate meeting desired goals. <br />• Ability to recognize questionable construction practices and provide proper guidance. <br />• Ability to apply technology based tools to collect, interpret and analyze critical <br />management information. <br />TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: <br />May require frequent use of a personal computer (including word processing and spreadsheet <br />software); network computer system for e-mail and internet; 10 -key calculator; telephone; copy <br />machine; and fax machine. <br />PHYSICAL DEMANDS: <br />The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an <br />employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
