Parks & Recreation Committee
Meeting Minutes 08 -04 -10
providing prizes at the end of the race and Chairperson Branch discussed creative ways of giving
away prizes, not just to the runners who finish first. The committee would like to add a FREE 1 K
Children's Run next year thinking this will be fun for the children, but also encourage parents to come
out and run. Chairperson Branch would like to see a sponsor provide half the funding with the
committee funding the balance. Discussion was also had as to adding a 10 mile in -line race.
Chairperson Branch questioned what date should be locked in for 2011? Running magazines need the
information by the end of August. It was suggested having a joint meeting with parade coordinator
(depending who is going to do the parade in 2011) and the Centerville Lions to determine what dates
they are selecting for Fete des Lacs events in 2011. Chairperson Branch would like to move the race
from the first Saturday in August to the last Saturday in July to avoid conflicts with a fairly large
established race and in -line scheduled for the first Saturday in August in St. Paul. The committee
agreed on Saturday, July 30, 2011 for next year's 8KRace.
Music in the Parks
Severe weather cancelled Mr. Tom Lee's performance on Tuesday, July 27 at Hidden Spring Park.
Mr. Lee is able to reschedule for Tuesday, August 2e which will extend the program for one week.
There were 6 gallons of ice cream and 108 cones to be used for this event which, some of which was
used on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 for the performance of the Banjo Boys Jazz Band. These two items
cost approximately $40 (Darrin Mosher's company donated half of the ice cream There was $150
remaining in funds allocated for the program leaving $110 for Mr. Lee's August 24 performance, the
committee needs to decide what they would like to do.
The committee opted to offer pizza and root beer floats for Mr. Lee's performance. Ms. Stephan will
make arrangements for pizza to be delivered.
It was also discussed that a committee member needs to be the Music in the Parks Program
Coordinator for the remaining events or at least individual members need to be responsible for specific
performances.
Fete des Lacs Parade Review
Mayor Capra updated the committee by saying the parade was a huge success and volunteers served
up 8 gallons of lemonade and about 350 cookies to the crowd following the parade. Every staff
person involved did an outstanding job in their various ways and Mayor Capra was very grateful for
all of the assistance. There were no problems with radio assistance from the Ham Radio Club;
everything went very smooth including crucial traffic intersections. There were some cookies left that
will be donated to Music in the Park Program for cookie ice cream sandwiches. The cub scouts
handed out 750 US flags to the kids along the route and Mayor Capra said there had to be at least
1,500 in attendance. Great time and a great job by all! Thank you for your support of our city and the
people that live here.
Park Program Fliers
The cost of printing the fliers will be split with the Fete des Lacs Parade/Fireworks budget.
5 of 6
