MAW TO: Honorable Mayor & City Council Members FROM: Kim Stephan DATE: September 16, 2010 SUBJECT: Support of the Large Gun Irrigation Heads Chairperson Branch and Vice - Chairperson Grahek were at the demonstration of the large gun irrigation head and reported their impressions to the rest of the committee at the September 15, 2010 Parks & Recreation Committee Meeting. Initially the committee requested City Council not use these heads, feeling they were too big for a park, a safety hazard for children who would ultimately climb on them and too loud for the abutting property owners. Following the demonstration Chairperson Branch and Vice - Chairperson Grahek reported their concerns were unfounded and questions were answered sufficiently for the committee to support the use of these heads in Laurie LaMotte Memorial Park. The equipment was quiet and the water flow was relatively slow and evenly distributed. There was some wind drift at the demonstration, but the company representative said this can be prevented by wind gauges installed on the equipment. It was also questioned as to whether these can be installed high enough from the ground to help discourage children from hanging from them or damaging them and it appears they can be. Motion was made by Vice - Chairperson Grahek, seconded by Chairperson Branch to inform City Council that the Parks & Recreation Committee support the large gun irrigation heads that were demonstrated on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 for installation in Laurie LaMotte Memorial Park as all concerns have been sufficiently met. All in favor. Motion carried unanimously. 9
